Bomb scare forces temporary closure of UNIJOS
THE University of Jos (UNIJOS) temporarily closed Thursday when students suspected a man who refused to disclose the contents of his bag to the security personnel at the gate.
Attracted by the scuffles that followed, the students of the Faculty of Education suspected the middle-aged man to be a member of the Boko Haram sect and descended heavily on him. However, they were restrained by the same security personnel.
When his bag was eventually forced open, it revealed only gari, rice, sugar and milk, but this was too late as information had spread of the presence of a terrorist with bombs, and both students and members of staff immediately abandoned lectures and scampered for safety.
It was only a matter of time and the university was deserted. The suspect was later discovered to be someone earlier withdrawn from his course by the university authority following mental problem, having failed in their bid to cure the illness.
Contacted, the Senior Assistant Registrar in charge of Information and Publication, Mr. Abdullahi Abdullahi, confirmed the incident but said the man had been released, having revealed nothing incriminating.
The Special Task Force and members of the anti-bomb squad had also arrived the venue following tip-off, only to discover that it was a hoax.
