DESPITE
the passage of the bill extending their retirement age to 65 years by
the state House of Assembly on Thursday, striking lecturers in all
tertiary institutions owned by the Osun State government, on Friday,
vowed not to resume duties until two other demands were met.
The
lecturers in Osun State Polytechnic (OSPOLY), Iree; Osun State College
of Education, Ila Orangun, Osun State College of Education, Ilesa and
Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, had embarked on industrial
action over the past five months, demanding the implementation of 65
years retirement age approved by the Federal Government.
Two
other demands of the lecturers, including the non-academic staff, which
government had failed to meet, are the non-remittance of deductions for
contributory pension of staff to their accounts with Pension Funds
Administrators (PFAs) and high regime of taxes.
Reacting
to the passage of the executive bill forwarded to the legislature a few
months ago by Governor Rauf Aregbesola, the lecturers, under the aeges
of Council of Academic Staff Union of Osun State Tertiary Institutions
(CASUOSTI), said its members would not resume work until their two other
demands before the state government were met.
In
a press statement signed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of
CASUOSTI, Dotun Omisore, the lecturers described the passage of the bill
as good and a welcome development on the part of the state government.
According
to him, “We still have two other demands, namely failure to remit
deductions of our contributory pensions funds running into billions of
naira into the accounts of lecturers and other non-teaching staff in the
custody of Pension Funds Administrators (PFAs) and stoppage of high tax
regime introduced by the government.source: http://www.tribune.com.ng/news/news-headlines/item/9802-5-month-old-strike-osun-lecturers-refuse-to-resume-work-despite-passage-of-65-yr-retirement-bill
