The Students’ Union Government of Lagos State University, LASU, on Monda described Governor Babatunde Fashola’s increase in LASU’s fees as against the All Progressives Congress’ policy on free and qualitative education.
The
statement was contained in an open letter signed by the president of
LASU Students’ Union, Mr Yusuf Temilola Nurudeen, and addressed to the
governor.
According
to the letter, ‘The fee regime is contrary to the ruling party’s All
Progressives Congress manifesto that promised free and qualitative
education.”
The
letter also alleged that the fee hike “has dealt a huge blow on the
future of Lagosians and the Nigerian youth.” The students also pleaded
with the governor “to rescue the school from its glorified secondary
school status.”
The
students, whose lecturers are on strike, also protested the fee hike,
made a passionate appeal to the governor to further reduce their fees.
They asked the state government to lead by example, imploring the
governor to use his powers as Visitor to prevail on the Governing
Council and effect the reduction as a matter of urgency.
It
will be recalled that after the increase of LASU fees in 2011 which was
met with a series of protests, the Lagos State government, in June,
this year, reduced the fees by 30-60 per cent, which was adopted and
implemented by the university governing council.
