A legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola, has called on the Federal Government to consider granting full autonomy to Nigerian universities as a way to remove the institutions from the current morass and avoid incessant strikes by the staff unions.

He has accordingly called for the review of the universities enabling acts in order to properly entrench the desired autonomy in the system.
He spoke while presenting his keynote address entitled: “University autonomy and Good governance,” at the Conference of Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities on Tuesday, in Abuja.
According to him, if universities were granted full autonomy, including freedom and financial autonomy, it would help reduce tensions and eliminate some of the root causes of the recurrent strike actions in the institutions.
He lamented that many Nigerian universities “are unable to compete with their foreign counterparts in recruiting the most qualified professors and teachers, some of whom are Nigerians, but are now scattered in foreign destinations.”
He said to stem the tide of this brain drain, “universities must have the budget, freedom and financial independence to be able to recruit the very best at all times.”
Babalola noted that Nigeria had the requisite human and capital resources to boast of the strongest, most collegial and the most autonomous university system in the world.
He was represented by Professor Yemi Akinseye-George at the conference. According to him, autonomy for Nigerian universities meant the right of a university to enjoy the core privileges of academic freedom, substantive independence and procedural self-independence, subject only to public accountability
