The
Chancellor, Covenant University, Ogun State, Dr. David Oyedepo, has
urged Nigerian universities to be responsive to the nation’s security
challenges.
Oyedepo, who recently delivered a
lecture titled, ‘Towards the way out for a nation under trial’ at the
9th convocation ceremony of the university, charged higher institutions
to engage in relevant topical research that could help solve the
security challenges in the country.
He said, “Universities must drive
relevance by continuously addressing and proffering solutions to the
challenges of the day like Boko Haram insurgency and all the associated
challenges, through intense discourse, debates and solution-finding
workshops.
“Universities do not just exist to teach
and graduate students, but rather to provide a platform for rigorous
intellectual discourse that aims at providing solutions to societal
problems and to define values and inspire research.”
The Deputy Governor, Economic Policy,
Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Sarah O. Alade, said national
transformation could not be achieved without economic transformation,
which itself is dependent on the strategic role of higher education
institutions in Nigeria and elsewhere.
