The Chairman, Association of Private
Educators in Nigeria, Dr. Tunde Ogunsanya, has described the adoption of
corporal punishment in some schools as counter-productive.
The APEN boss who made this call in Lagos on Thursday said flogging errant pupils was not an acceptable international practice.
“It is not allowed in our schools because
it is counter-productive. We have measures for disciplining our pupils
and flogging can never be an option. It does not produce any good
result,” she said.
In the same vein, the principal, Mind
Builders School, Lagos, Mr. Francis Fasuyi, has said discipline, rather
than corporal punishment, would help achieve results faster in pupils.
“When you discipline, it is corrective
but when you punish or cane a pupil, you are just inflicting pain. For
any errant pupil, we bring them out on the assembly or we ask them to
clean the toilets under the supervision of the cleaners. That is
discipline. The shame that comes with it will bar them from repeating
the offence,’’ he said.
Also, the head teacher, Masterpiece
Schools, Agbado, Lagos, Mr. Babatunde Atambala, described corporal
punishment as ‘negative reinforcement’. According to him, it is better
for public and private schools to tailor discipline to the personality
of the child.
“You have to understudy a child and get
to know what her or she likes. For instance, a child that refuses to
write in class but likes playing with toys during break time can be
denied that pleasure. That is positive reinforcement. There is no
punishment that should lead to infliction of injury no matter what the
child might have done,’’ he saidsource: http://www.punchng.com/education/proprietors-unite-against-corporal-punishment/
