StrikeSSANU-LASU, varsity management in crucial meeting
The management of the Lagos State University (LASU) led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof John Obafunwa, has met with the leadership of the striking Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) in a bid to end the one-month-old strike.
The meeting, which was at the instance of the university management, took place on Tuesday at the Senate building and had in attendance, other principal officers of LASU, while SSANU-LASU chairman, Oseni Saheed, led his executive to the meeting that was held behind closed-doors.
The meeting held same day the association addressed journalists on the ongoing strike while the invitation for the discussion came less than 24 hours after SSANU members staged a protest in the Admin Block housing the offices of the vice chancellors, the two deputy vice chancellors, registrar, bursar and the university librarian.
According to the SSANU chairman, the meeting might have been conveyed to forestall another protest from his members, who had accused the university management of not working towards ending the one-month-old strike by refusing to engage their leaders in any discussion.
Emerging from the meeting with his executive, Saheed said the university management was seeking for truce and that they had been asked to produce a vital document in relation to one of its major demands.
Addressing newsmen before the meeting with the university management, Saheed had said that in the last three years, SSANU had observed several problems facing LASU and irregularities in the running of the institution which he described as unacceptable.
