AFN, CAA sign agreement on UNIPORT training centre


The Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the Confederation of African Athletics have signed an agreement for the establishment of a training centre at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State.

The CAA signed the Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the International Association of Athletics Federations.

The centre, the first of its kind in Africa, is nearing completion at the University of Port Harcourt main campus.

The CAA president, Hamad Kaikaba, said the CAA and IAAF decided to establish the centre at the University of Port Harcourt because it would give athletes the opportunity to train and study.

“This has been our dream for so long, but I thank God that the dream is now a reality,” Kaikaba said at the completion of Marrakech 2014 African Athletics Championships in Morocco .

Kaikaba said countries like Nigeria and South Africa must assist smaller countries in Africa to achieve their potential by providing assistance in all areas of athletics.

The Nigerian government was represented by the Minister at the Embassy of Nigeria in Morocco Lawal Bappah, AFN president Solomon Ogba, Director of Sports University of Port Harcourt Dr. Ken Anuwegje, AFN technical director Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama, Special Assistanct to the Director General of National Sports Commission Mary Onyali, and Hawa Kulu-Akinyemi a director at the NSC.
