Community’s N3m school yet to be approved by AMAC

We spent about N3m to built a block of five classrooms in 2012, and we still await the approval of the government before it can be put into use, says the community head of Kuyami community in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Ogwe Buwak.

The community head, who spoke to our reporters, lamented that the residents have yet to benefit from the school project as intended.
Moses Anyaddadukim, who spoke on behalf of the community head, said about 100 households in the community contributed N30,000 each to the building which was completed in 2012.
“We have no primary school in the community, and we decided to build one but government did not take action since we completed the building,” he said.
He added that the residents have written to the authorities of the Abuja Municipal Area Council about the school but they are yet to receive a response from the authorities.
“We also wrote to the District Head in Ido once but we have not heard anything from him regarding the school,” he said.
He said that due to the lack of approval, the residents still engage themselves in the one hour trek to Toge, a neighbouring community, to attend primary school, while they go as far as Kuje and communities around the airport to attend secondary schools.
“We built the school but the government has not given approval for its use since 2012. We normally attend primary school in Goza and it is far away from this community and we manage the primary school in Toge,” he said.
He said the long distance residents have to trek sometimes discourages them from enrolling their children in school.
Moses said that the community has now rented the school building to one woman, who uses it as a nursery and primary school.
“The woman agreed that she will vacate the premises as soon as we’ve gotten an approval from the government to run our school,” he said, adding that the private school has been assisting few of the residents that can afford it.
He said that leaving the building unused will lead to its deterioration. “If the building is not used, it could become weakened, thereby leading to its collapse,” he pointed out.
