Ebola: NYSC DG assures corps members of safety
The Director General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumni, has assured corps members across the country of their maximum safety and security against the spread of the dreaded Ebola virus disease.
Olawumni, who gave the assurance when he visited the orientation camp at Kubwa, said the disease would not disrupt the exercise as precautionary measures have been put in place to prevent the occurence of the disease in camp.
“We have taken precautionary measures by providing all the camps across the nation with the necessary items that will aid the health workers in our clinics in performing their duties” he stated.
He also revealed that all State Directors were directed to liase with the Ministry of Health in their respective states to integrate all orientation camps in the overall action plan towards efforts in containing the incidence of the disease.
The NYSC boss further reassured corps members that adequate security measures had been put in place to ensure their safety both during and after the orientation course.
“Our care for your security does not end only when you are on camp. Even in your places of primary assignment, we are keeping a tab on you. Our hope is that just as your parents released you to us completely, we are also going to release you to your parents complete at the end of the service year,” he assured.
The Director General, who expressed satisfaction in the state of facilities at the camp, however, maintained that there is a level of comfort expected in the camps in order to justify its status as orientation camps, and not hotels.
Responding to a question on the corps members involvement in the forthcoming general elections, particularly in the volatile states, the NYSC boss disclosed that the scheme has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Independent National Electoral Commission, and would be guided by the feelings of the parents of corps members.
“We will assess the situation before taking a decision when the time comes. We will however be guided by the parents’ feelings because the scheme values their thinking” he noted.
Earlier, the FCT Coordinator hinted that apart from the twelve corps members involved in an accident on their way to their previous states of deployment, no life threatening incidences had been recorded in the camp.
