Entrepreneurship education’ll reduce unemployment –KWASU VC

Entrepreneurship education is a potent strategy to reduce the high unemployment rate in Nigeria and increase wealth creation in the country, the Vice-Chancellor, Kwara State University, Prof. AbdulRasheed Na’Allah, has said.

While urging the federal and state governments to intensify efforts in human capital development and skill acquisition, he noted that exposing students to entrepreneurship education would equip them with relevant skills and entrepreneurship basic knowledge that would assist them to become self-reliant and even employers of labour after graduation rather than being released to the highly saturated labour market.

He spoke during a media briefing on the take-off of the degree programme in Entrepreneurship Education in KWASU, Malete, Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State on Tuesday.

He stressed the importance of creating small scale enterprises as a veritable mechanism to increase wealth, reduce unemployment and boost the economy.

He added that it was essential to train teachers that would be knowledgeable in enterprise education so that they would teach and train the students effectively.

According to him, it is also necessary to introduce enterprise education in secondary schools across the country for early exposure of the students.

Na’Allah said, “The introduction of the degree programme is meant to bridge the gap, by providing competent teachers for the teaching of Entrepreneurship Education and the trade subjects in Nigerian senior basic and secondary schools. This will aid the training of teachers who will raise new breeds of school leavers with the spirit of enterprise and industry and in the long run, help to grow the economy through the establishment of small-scale businesses.

“At KWASU, we are certain that every student produced by us has an opportunity to create wealth regardless of what the student studied. In fact, a number of our students and alumni are already operating their own businesses. They are creating new ideas, bringing new products into the market and collaborating with industries.

“With this, we are addressing the nation’s triangular problem of education/unemployment/ unemployability.”

He appealed to all stakeholders in the education sector to collaborate with the new Department of Business and Entrepreneurship Education in KWASU to realiSe its set goals.

“As it is today, the new department of Business and Entrepreneurship Education will be offering two new degrees, the first one started since 2009, when the department was called Department of Business Education.

“By this action, in this academic year, the university has added one new degree, i.e. B.Sc./B.A. Entrepreneurship Education, to be offered by the department and has changed its name to Department of Business and Entrepreneurship Education.

“This one department with two academic sections will therefore have a single Head of Department and two sectional heads, i.e. Head of Business Education and Head of Entrepreneurship Education,” the VC said.
