Fashola reverses LASU tuition fee to N25,000
It was jubilation galore at the Lagos State University (LASU), on Thursday, when the state government announced the reversal of the tuition fees to N25,000.
Both lecturers and students greeted the announcement with joy, while lauding the state government for hearkening to their pleas.
Governor Babatunde Fashola, while speaking at the 19th convocation ceremony, Fashola commended the academic and non-academic staff’s effort at ensuring a smooth calendar, which led to the graduation ceremony, despite the nine months strike.
“Our students have also shown that they can choose the path of conflict resolution. They have reached out to me for a revision of their fee, which I have acceded to, in consultation with the state executive council for reduction between 34 per cent and 60 per cent across board.
“Inspite of this reduction, the student have again demanded for further reduction. And they have done so in the most civilised way. And because of this, we had to consult extensively and we have come to the conclusion that the current economic situation of the country, compel a reduction to the old tuition fees for the institution.
“I commend you all for rallying round the vice chancellor, Professor john Obafunwa, to ensure that these students graduate today. You ensured that academic activities went on in the heat of the strike.
“Our local ASUU has also accepted dialogue, an internal mechanism. I must commend you for that. This must be the character of LASU, to lead the way, away from destruction and to move forward into a firstclass global institution.”
The governor further said this was a response to the yearning of parents, guardian, senior citizens of the country and that he believed that with this, an end had come to the activities of busy bodies, who had resorted to use funding tertiary education in our country to gain public recognition.
