LASU: Fees trouble resolved, staff promotion issues linger
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State last week reduced the tuition fee of the state university, Lagos state University, LASU, to the original N25,000 but it is not yet uhuru for all the concerned parties.
The major cause of the crisis that led to a face-off between the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU- LASU, Students Union Government, SUG and the university management, were reduction of the tuition fees to N25, 000 and the repeal of the ‘No vacancy, no promotion’ policy introduced by the institution’s management.
LASU-19TH-CONVOCATIONThese major issues have raised another source of concern which borders on the payment of salary for the two months they embarked on industrial action to demand for a reverse of the management’s decision.
The tuition matter was resolved at the 19th convocation of the institution by the Lagos State governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola. This development led to series of commendation and a peaceful rally by the Students Union Government,SUG, and the National Association of Nigerian Students, ,NANS.
The SUG President, Mr. Nurudeen Yusuf and the South West Zonal Coordinator of NANS, Mr. Sunday Ashafa, who led their members to the seat of power, said that their visit was to express appreciation to him for acceding to their plea.
However, the ‘No vacancy, No Promotion’ policy is yet to receive the attention of the government. And the salaries of the staff who embarked on the two months strike are yet to be paid.
Even the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council, Mr. Bode Agusto, in his speech at the convocation accepted the challenges facing the institution, saying, “we need help in order to achieve the LASU that we all desire.”
Speaking to the chairman of SSANU-LASU, Mr. Oseni Saheed admitted that one major section of the crisis has been resolved but the others which concern staff issues were yet to be attended to .
Oseni said; “After our protest on last Thursday, the management is yet to invite the union for any meeting. This is against the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU both parties signed before the union called of its two months old strike.
“And that was why we embarked on the protest last Thursday. And the best way to achieve peace in the institution is for the management to see to the lingering issues.’’
