Omisore’s controversial gift to OAU students

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have adopted different positions on the recent donation of a bus to the Students’ Union of the institution by the governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

Comments:

Des Ade: The Students’ Union’s action was wrong! The OAU student leader who collected the bus donation is gradually becoming a product of his environment. But the greatest wrong is committed by the giver. Why make donations at election time? The act of distributing anything to anybody by any political party or party member in the build-up to an election should be treated as a criminal offence. Everyone knows these people are not charity organizations. They will steal the money in multiples when they get to power.

Olusola Oyeniyi: This is a Greek gift given at the wrong time and it speaks to nothing, but what we have been struggling with in our society: corruption. This is absolute corruption on the part of both the governorship candidate of the PDP and the Student Union leadership of OAU. Do we really have any hope of having a corruption-free society, if our future leaders can stoop so low to the extent of getting kick-backs from politicians that have no interest in the well fare of anybody in Nigeria? I am disappointed in the behaviour of the OAU Students’ Union leaders. I wish both the governorship candidate of the PDP and OAU Students’ Union leaders, the best of luck.

Ajayi Olupona: Gone are the days when students used to be the hope of the masses! Today, those parading themselves as student leaders are mere bands of opportunists patronising politicians for either bribes or favours! This development is a very big disappointment indeed.

Tunslo: It is saddening that corruption now starts from our higher institutions of learning. During my time as a student leader, student unions used to function as pressure groups that condemned the ills in the society. But now they speak well of the worst cases in our society.
