School director tasks pupils on English Language

The Director, Champions Schools, Magboro, Lagos, Mr. Fola Adekeye, has urged pupils to endeavour to adhere to the rules of English Language.
Adekeye stated this last Thursday during the school’s 10th valedictory and graduation.
Describing as ironic the ability of many pupils to speak English Language fluently, the educationist expressed disappointment that many of them could not write the language correctly.
The director, who also inaugurated a book, English Language for Colleges, said the book would be an asset for pupils seeking to be conversant with the rudiments of the language.
He added, “It is based on my` observation that students are failing English Language in college because they lack basic grammatical grounding.
“Teachers are partly to blame. They often teach comprehension, summary, letter and essay writing without devoting enough time to teaching grammatical structures.
“Again, good books are hard to come by on the English grammar. This book has come to fill the void. I insist that no child should leave a college without having the ability to write any sentence and analysising it grammatically.”
In his review, a journalist, Mr. Olayinka Oyegbile, commended the author for his efforts.
He noted, “Fola Adekeye has in English Grammar for Colleges, done our students and every one of us who communicates in the language a world of favour. Don’t be deceived by the title, every one of us needs this book because since we have agreed to transact our daily businesses in English we must endeavour to use it well.
“Many perhaps say, ‘Where did he go to?’ instead of the correct: ‘Where did he go?’ the ‘to’ there is redundant and unnecessary. The same goes for ‘I will go later on.’ Instead of just saying, ‘I will go later.’
“How many of us would not frown when we hear someone say, ‘You may look out the window’? This is the correct sentence instead of the common ‘You may look out of the window’ that we use.”
