Two shot as UNICAL holds SUG election
Two students of the University of Calabar were, yesterday, shot by security operatives drafted to monitor the botched Student Union Government, SUG, elections of the varsity.
The election that was held to fill various positions of the student union government ended in a fiasco, following gunshots allegedly fired by Unical securitymen, the police and rival factions, who tried to install their candidates into the SUG executive.
Our correspondent gathered that one of the victims of the gunshot, a male, sustained wounds on his head while the other, another male, sustained various degrees of injuries to his legs.
An eyewitness, Nkoyo Akpan, who spoke to our correspondent, alleged that the first victim was shot by the institution’s surveillance securitymen, while the other person was shot by a rival cult group that felt it was their candidate who is most qualified to fill the position of SUG president.
However, the school gate has been cordoned off by heavily armed policemen, soldiers and personnel of the State Department of Public Transportation, DoPT.
Attempt to confirm the fracas from the institution’s Public Relations Officer and that of the police did not yield any fruit as none of them picked the call.
However, students of the institution who live at the Unical hostels have expressed fear over possible reprisal attacks by friends of the victims.
Boarding students were seen running helter-skelter, packing their bags and leaving the campus through the Goldier Mount Zion junction small gate of Goldie Market.
