UNIBEN VC healthy, says SSANU

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Nigerian Universities, National Association of Academic Technologists and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, UNIBEN branch, on Monday said that the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Godwin Oshodin, “is hale and heart” and has resumed office.

While briefing newsmen in Benin, the three unions condemned what they described as “mischievous, wicked” and “selfish” reports peddled by “detractors,” over the absence of the VC, who was flown abroad for medical attention.

According to the unions, the detractors had claimed that there had been “so much anxiety in the air within the University of Benin community” over the absence of the VC on medical treatment abroad and that his absence had slowed down activities in the institution.

It would be recalled that Professor Oshodin was flown abroad for medical treatment due to ill health in May.

However, the unions, in a statement signed by their chairmen, said,”It is sad to note how the pursuit of selfish interest could drive some persons to the point of losing sight of the uniqueness of the university system, whose operations are largely guided by the rule of law.”

They stated that in spite of the VC’s absence, the university had resumed for the second semester, which began August 11. It also hosted over 2,000 athletes and officials, who participated in the 11th edition of the Nigerian Universities Staff Sports Association Games, they said. They also said the process for the promotion of all categories of staff was ongoing.

“We advise those calling for the appointment of an acting Vice-Chancellor to check the statutes for their own good.Anyway, we are delighted to make it known that Professor O. G. Oshodin (JP), our amiable Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, is hale and hearty; he resumed duty on Monday.”
