WAEC Releases May-June Results, Records Marginal Decline in Students’ Performance

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) yesterday released its May/June 2014 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

The WAEC Head of the National Office, Charles Eguridu, who announced the release of the results at the WAEC national office in Lagos said: “Out of 1,705,976 candidates who registered for the examination, 1,692,435 candidates sat for the examination. 1,605613 representing 94.87 per cent have their results fully released while the results of 145,795 candidates are being withheld in connection with various types of examination malpractices. “

He added that 86,822 candidates representing 5.13 per cent have their subjects still being processed due to some errors mainly traceable to laxity on the part of the candidates and schools in the course of registration and writing the examination.

Giving a breakdown of the results, Eguridu said a total of 791,227 candidates obtained six credits and above while 982,472 candidates representing 58.05 per cent recorded five credits and above. He said 1,148,262 candidates representing 67.84 per cent obtained credits and above in four subjects while 1,293,389 candidates representing 76.42 per cent recorded credits and above in three subjects with a total of 1,426,926 candidates representing 84.31 per cent obtaining credits and above in two subjects.

Eguridu said that 161 blind candidates registered and 150 sat for the examination, adding that of the figure, 21 candidates obtained credits in five subjects including English Language.

According to him, “blind candidates do not take Mathematics and Science practical in the WASSCE. In all, a total of 529,425 candidates representing 31.28 per cent obtained five credits and above including English and Mathematics.”

He added that there was a marginal decline in the performance of candidates in this WAEC examination compared to students’ performance in the 2012/2013 May/June WASSCE.

“In 2013, a total of 610,334 candidates representing 36.57 per cent obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

“In 2012, a total of 649,156 candidates representing 38.81 per cent obtained credits in five subjects and above including English Language and Mathematics,” he said.
Eguridu attributed the poor performance of candidates during major examinations to wrong values, lack of role models, poor incentives for teachers as well as lack of qualified teachers, among other challenges.

However, he said WAEC had introduced a mathematical sets with in-built non-programmable scientific calculators in order to guard against malpractice and improve standard. The mathematical set, according to him will be made available to students on the day of examination. “Henceforth, bringing in any other non-approved mathematical set or calculator to examination halls will not be allowed,” he said
