Why education standard is declining – Chukwumerije

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, has identified inconsistency in policy implementation, inadequate funding and change of leadership as reasons for the decline of education standard in the country.

Speaking at the launching of the revised 9-year Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) in Abuja, Senator Chukwumerije said until the problems were solved, education will continue to suffer in Nigeria.
“Until we address these and other related problems at the foundation level, the country cannot achieve success in the education sector. We need urgent and real improvement in the sector,” he said.
Chukwumerije said that the National Assembly will continue to do its best in appropriating funds to the education sector for a better result.
He said: “The revised curriculum has opened a new chapter in the education sector of Nigeria. With this new curriculum the foundation of education would be strengthened and if it is faithfully implemented it will heal the weaknesses in the sector.
“If a foundation of a structure is weak, the structure cannot stand firm. The totality of the welfare of education sector is the foundation of education and unless we improve on that, the sector will continue to decline.”
