FG introduces e-curriculum for schools •It will reduce mass failure in WAEC, NECO —NERDC
THE Federal Government has introduced e-curriculum for senior secondary school education as part of the reforms to strengthen the quality of education in the country.
Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Professor Godswill Obioma, described the digitalised curriculum as an attempt to reduce the incidence of mass failures in public examination.
Speaking at a news conference ahead the formal launching of the e-teaching and learning platform today, Obioma said the initiative was in line with the transformation of the Federal Government to make Nigeria education globally competitive.
He attributed poor performance of candidates in public examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO) among others, to inadequate teaching and learning.
Professor Obioma maintained that the e-curriculum would add value to the quality of education delivery, thereby addressing the menace of poor performance in public examinations and students learning achievements.
He explained that what the Council had done was to convert the conventional 9-Year Basic Education Curriculum into digital platform, in order to make it more accessible to both teachers and students.
The e-curriculum portal is developed in collaboration with an ICT firm, SIDMACH Technologies Nig. Ltd, in line with the Federal Government’s Public Private Sector Partnership initiative.
The NERDC boss said the e-curriculum portal would contribute in no small measure towards ensuring that teachers, learners and other relevant stakeholders, had easy access to the vital teaching and learning resource.
He said: “The NERDC/SIDMACH e-curriculum initiative is a web-based, efficient and effective curriculum delivery solution for learners, teachers, education managers and other stakeholders.
“The purpose is to ensure online access to the prescribed national curriculum in all subjects offered at the Senior Secondary education level in Nigeria,”.
The Executive Director of SIDMACH Technologies, Mr Mike Olajide, in his remarks, said what NERDC had done was to introduce a new culture of learning very cost-effective for both parents and teachers.
