The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) said it has mandated principals in public schools in the state to have classroom reading corners, to promote reading culture among students. Mrs Gbolahan Daodu, Executive Chairman SUBEB, said that the idea of having a reading corner with library material in the classroom was to ensure that the students had easy access to required books.
“The state government has also taken the challenge to encourage reading culture among students by providing the fund for SUBEB to purchase and supply schools with various library materials on regular basis,’’ she said.
According to Daodu, the policy is already effective in the secondary schools, as a day has been set aside within the week for the students to study and read books.
“Though such a day has yet to be set aside in the primary schools, we would ensure the compliance,’’ she added.
Reacting to the mass failure in the recently released West African Examination Council (WAEC) results, Daodu said that the government or teachers should not be blamed.
She said that the parents and students were the major culprits, noting that parents no longer devote time to monitor the education and performance of their wards.
Daudu said that students were also to blame as they were not ready to read and develop their talents.
She urged parents to collaborate with the government in the task of rejuvenating reading culture among students, to improve the standard of education in Nigeria.
“The state government in the past four years has ensured maximum improvement in the education sector; that was why it acquired the World Bank loan.
“It is because of the positive impact and improvement that the World Bank saw in the education sector of the state that propelled them to renew the loan for the state.
