ASUU, SSANU, NAATS, NASU down tools in CRUTECH

Academic activities at the Cross River State University of Technology, CRUTECH, has come to a halt as the four major industrial unions have embarked on work-to-rule action to press home their demand for payment of all outstanding arrears of salaries and other benefits due to them.

The unions including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, National Association of Academic Technologists, NAATS, and Non Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASUU, are piqued at the non-regular payment of staff salaries and allowances owed them by state government, the owner of the institution.
DAILY SUN investigations revealed that ASUU decided to adopted a “No Work, No Pay” at the Congress held yesterday to review the state of things at the institution.
At the Congress, it was learnt that the lecturers resolved unanimously to withdraw their services until all their outstanding salaries are paid fully, decrying also the state of the state of the sorry institution.
Speaking on phone with our correspondent, the Chairman of ASUU, CRUTECH chapter, Dr. Steve Ochang, said, “Yes, we have decided to withdraw our services from the institution until at least our November and December salaries are fully paid. Anything short of that would not be acceptable to us.”
Also peaking, the chapter chairman of NAATS, Comrade Ofem Omini, said, “We declared work-to-rule action since December, but it takes effect from tomorrow (today). We are declaring an industrial dispute because the state government has not implemented the 2009 agreement neither have they paid us salaries regularly.
“Besides, we are grossly under-funded as a university to enable us produce the adequate man power. I think it is high time the state government looked into the problems of the institution critically.”
Reacting, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Offiong E. Offiong, said, “I invited the union leaders to a meeting they refused to turn up and that is not a mark of ASUU. At least I had expected them to come so we can look at some issues and find a way out instead of embarking on work-to-rule.
“Well, I have conveyed their grievances to the governor and od hope we would get over it soon,” he stated.
