Yejide Girls Grammar School groomed us to be the best always —Alumnus

Yejide Girls Grammar School (YGGS) is among the best public schools in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State since inception in 1956. The school, which was established by the Anglican Communion, has produced many graduates who have become successful in their careers and other endeavours. One of such products is Mrs. Olubisi Akintayo(nee Ogunfolu), who is today the Proprietress of Flobeez Private School, Ojodu, Lagos.
The wife of Lagos State governor Mrs Abimbola Fashola and those of Ogun and Oyo States, Mrs Olufunsho Amosun and Florence Ajimobi, respectively, as well the wife of the late Ondo State governor, Mrs. Agagu were all products of the school. Interestingly, Akintayo’s experience back in the school 40 years after is still fresh in her memory.

Bisi, as she was fondly called by her mates was 13 years old when she gained admission into the school and she later became the school head girl. Yejide Girls at the period according to her was in the same rank with the likes of Queens School, Apata; St. Theresas and St. Annes in Molete, all in Ibadan.
“It was a pride for most parents, especially from Ibadan and Lagos to have their daughters schooling at Yejide Girls and I happened to be from Lagos.
This was because the school was not only sound academically, it was also superb in moral and extra-curriculum activities. Honestly speaking, it was all-round education that we received there.
We were taught how to carry our legs when we are walking, how to stand, how to cook, how to be clean all the time and how to live healthy and that,” Bisi recalled nostalgically.
She explained that the school did not only make classrooms, dormitories, library, sporting arena, laboratories friendly to students, it also paraded well- trained and committed teachers including the principal.
“There was also discipline and students were taught to be hardworking and respect the seniors, teachers and every other person who was older in the society. You dared not cheat in exam because once you were caught, you would be expelled from the school and no one wanted to tarnish his family names.
In fact, the experience really equipped us for future. “Our principal, Mrs. Yetunde Omisade, who is now late, for instance, was a disciplinarian.
She wanted the best for us and because of that, she always told us to make our books our best friends,” Akintayo further explained. Interestingly, she is still remembers some of her mates with their full names.
They included, Jumoke Bankole (her deputy and now Mrs. Amole); Mrs. Iyabo Onibokun (nee Ilegbusi); Bintu Ajala; Joke Segun; Bisi Segun; Bose Bello of blessed memory; Busola Osibodu; Iyabo Adebayo; Malomo Okuyemi; Opeyemi Runsewe; Shade Mabo; Shade Beckley; Shade Ogunlase, among others. Akintayo’s best subject was mathematics and that was because according to her it involved calculations with straight answers.
She was also good in debate and she had severally won laurels for the school in inter-schools competitions. On her most memorable event which according to her was when she was appointed as the school head girl, she just burst into tears.
“We were all in the assembly when I was called out in the midst of others that I was now the new head girl. The news came like a surprise and I didn’t know when I started crying,” she said. For her strong love for the school, she still keeps in touch through alumni association.
“Through that platform, we have done some projects including dormitories and halls. We also sunk a borehole and donated some computers and we will still do more to make the school retains its glory,” she concluded
