NDF Commends INEC on Poll Shift
The National Democratic Front (NDF), a pro-democracy group, has lauded INEC’s decision to postpone the general election, describing it as a patriotic decision in the interest of the nation that must be commended.
NDF Coordinator, Comrade Philip Agbese, in a statement yesterday, said the decision cleared all allegations that the electoral body was doing the bidding of a particular ethnic group and certain political actors.
According to Agbese, INEC showed clearly it's interest was to respect the rights of about 22 million Nigerians who have a right to vote and be voted for at the polls.
He further commended what he termed the remarkable improvement in inclusive democratic ethos like hearkening to the voice of the majority of political parties who overwhelmingly called for the postponement.
Military Partisan in the postponement, Says Duhu
A candidate of the APC contesting for Michika/Madagali Federal Constituency, in Adamawa State, Alhaji Umar Duhu, has accused the military of partisanship in the postponement of the February general election.
Duhu told journalists in Yola yesterday that the Nigerian military are meant to protect the country against any external aggression not to be partisan in the country's polity.
No Protests, Abia Warns
Fearing that the shift in the date of the polls could trigger some wild protests, the Abia State government has warned that there should be no form of politically-motivated protests whatsoever.
In a special announcement yesterday, the state government said that it "has been reliably informed that some politicians from outside the state were planning a protest against INEC at Aba". In the statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Abia Governor, Mr. Charles Ajunwa, the state government warned that it would not allow the planned protest being organised by "some politicians from other states"
