FG tackles challenges that keep children out of school



President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday stated that his administration was taking proactive steps to stem the challenges that keep children out of school in some part of the country.
Jonathan who was represented by Vice President, Sambo Namadi, revealed that Nigeria has achieved the gender parity targets at primary and secondary educational level.
Speaking in Abuja at the Presidential summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the post-2015 Development Agenda with the theme “the MDGs and the Socio-Economic Transformation of Nigeria, Jonathan noted that in order to meet the 2015 target, the infant mortality rate of 61 per 1000 live births needs to reduce by 50 per cent.
“We will continue to provide incentives to ensure sustained female school enrollement. Government is taken proactive steps to stem the challenges that keep children out of school in some parts of the country” he said.
According to the President, the MDGs framework has helped to focus international and local attention on improving the lives of those most vulnerable in society,” adding that government must now increase its efforts in its remaining 500 days to complete what was started under the MDGs agenda.”
Earlier, the Senior Special Assistant to President on MDGs, Dr Precious Gbeneol stressed that in spite of all the gains made through the implementation of the MDGs agenda globally, poverty eradication remains one of the major challenges facing the world.
According to her, the formulation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda should be based on eradicating poverty, “which is an indispensable requirement for sustainable development,” there was the need to promote inclusive and equitable economic growth in order to achieve sustainable development.
“This requires that we create greater opportunities for citizens by reducing inequalities, fostering social development and inclusion and promoting integrated and sustainable management of our natural capital. According to her, sustainable development entails the act of balancing the economic, social, and environmental costs and benefits of development by embracing the principles of inter-generational and intra-generational equity as well as that of prudent natural resource management
