The management of the Medifield Healthcare Limited has promised to continue to support the wellbeing of the Nigerian child.
The Managing Director of the company,
Dr. Adewale Owolabi, stated this in Lagos while presenting eyeglasses to
pupils of Karis School, Magodo.
According to Owalabi, the company is passionate about the wellbeing of pupils in order to improve their academic performance.
“The 10 beneficiaries today were not
aware of their visual impairment until we carried out the screening
which involved no fewer than 150 pupils of the school.”
Advocating the implementation of a
robust school health programme in schools, Owolabi stated that research
had linked better learning outcomes to the health and wellbeing of
pupils.
He said, “In a study carried out by the
Federal Ministry of Education in conjunction with the Federal Ministry
of Health, World Health Organisation and United Nations Children
Education Fund, it was discovered that about one out of every five
pupils in Nigerian schools have sub-optimal vision.
“Another study showed that about 19 per
cent of the pupils had sub-optimal hearing. This no doubt can greatly
impair ability to learn given that educational instructions are passed
to the pupils through audiovisual means.”
The firm’s Coordinator, Medical
Services, Dr. Bukola Ugwu, also urged institutions of learning to
embrace school-health programme.
She identified a functional sick bay,
skill-based health education, regular de-worming exercise, and adequate
nutrition as some of the basic features of the initiative.
The Executive Director of the school,
Deaconess Rosemary Nwajei, who said pupils of the school had benefited
from the initiative, advised other schools to key into the programme.
