N65bn TETFund funds unaccessed

The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Professor Sulaiman Ellias has said that a sum of N65bn funds meant for disbursement in 2013 is still in the coffers of the TETFund.

Professor Bogoro made the disclosure when he received members of the House Committee on Education who paid an oversight visit to his office on Tuesday.
He said TETFund has a huge sum of money in its possession since 2014 which is yet to be accessed by the beneficiaries, adding: “In TETFund we don’t tamper with anybody’s funds. Most of the 2013 funds are for the NEEDS Assessment.
“We are worried about the funds and we have told the benefiting institutions to come and accesses the funds. But they cannot access them without meeting the requirements. We have guidelines for accessing, disbursement and monitoring of our funds for projects and that is why we don’t have failed or abandoned projects.”
He said, however, that institutions cannot access funds without accounting for collections from the funds.
He told the committee members that the two newly established federal polytechnics in Akawa-Ibom and Ondo states would soon access their N1bn take-off grant each.
Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Aminu Sulaiman Fagge, assured of the support of the committee, saying any nation desirous of progress must address ills of education sector.
He said: “Several attempts were made by successive governments to address the ills bedevilling the education sector but, unfortunately, in most of the instances, very little has been achieved.”
Fagge commended the TETFund, urging it to maintain the spirit of transparency in its operations and service delivery.
