Private schools employ quacks as teachers – Provost

The Provost of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Otto\Ijanikin, Lagos State, Mr. Wasiu Bashorun has indicated that most private schools in the country were fond of employing non-professionals as teachers in their schools.

He said the practice had taken a huge toll on the quality of products coming out of those schools and the standard of education in general.

He made the observation at the induction and oath taking ceremony organised by the college for categories of its graduates recently. A total of 500 NCE and Professional Diploma in Education graduates of the college took part in the ceremony.

The provost, who frown at the practice however called on the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and the state ministries of education nationwide to jointly, as matter of urgency, rise up to stem the practice before it does more damage to the country’s education system.

According to him, teaching at all levels of education should be by professionals so as to get good results and not by mediocre as the practice by many private schools in the country.

For graduating students, the provost advised them not only to go by the ethic of the profession in discharging their responsibilities, but also to ensure that their coming into the profession brings about positive impact to the system.

He promised that the college would continue to produce teachers that are globally competitive. In his address, the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of TRCN, Prof. Addison Wokocha, who conducted the induction ceremony, told the inductees to follow the world best practices, saying it is only through that they can make success out of the career.

He noted that any Nigerian teacher who is certified and licensed by the council is qualified to take up teaching appointment elsewhere around the world
