Sokoto Disburses N200m Interest-free Loans to Primary School Teachers

Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, has commenced the disbursement of N200 million interests-free loans to primary school teachers across the 23 local government areas of the state.

Speaking during the commencement of the loan disbursement yesterday, Wamakko described the gesture as part of his administration’s efforts towards motivating teachers to discharge their duties efficiently.

According to him, the initiative would help encourage teachers to redouble efforts in order to achieve the desired goals.

"The essence of this interest-free revolving loan to primary school teachers is to ease their means of transportation and other domestic issues," Wamakko stated.

The governor also emphasised that it was in line with the need to upgrade the knowledge of teachers, that the state government sponsored 226 teachers to undergo post-graduate programme in education at the Islamic University in Uganda.

Wamakko pointed out that by the time the teachers graduated, their workforce and capacity would have improved to provide basic qualitative education in the state.

He further noted that the state government had purchased and distributed Toyota Hilux van and motorcycles to all Education Secretaries and Monitoring Officers for effective monitoring and supervision of schools.

The governor explained that each education officer and supervisor would receive N106, 000, headmaster N80, 000 while teachers would get N50, 000 as interest-free loan.

Wamakko therefore urged parents and other relevant stakeholders in the education sector to compliment government's efforts in uplifting the standard of education in the state by sending their children to school, especially those in rural areas.

He called on the teachers to be more dedicated to their responsibilities, stressing that the state government was committed to their (teachers) welfare.

In his remark, the Chairman of the state Universal Basic Education Board, Prof. Musa Maitafsir, who commended the gesture, urged the teachers to make judicious use of the interest free loan.
