The Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, has stated that the e-curriculum portal developed by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council would strengthen the quality of education in the country.
He therefore called on all players in the curriculum implementation at various government levels, including the private educational institutions, to support the project.
The e-curriculum is a web-based, curriculum delivery solution for students and teachers in primary and secondary schools, education managers and other stakeholders.
Speaking at the inaugurate of the project in Abuja, Wike, noted that the e-curriculum portal had been uploaded with teachers’ guide, scheme of work, sample lessons plans, teacher notes, e-learning resources, e-books and suggested learning resources.
According to him, the portal will close the identified gap in the sector as well as address the shortage of prescribed national curricula in schools, noting that the solution would provide digital access to school curricula, sample teaching resources for teachers, sample learning materials, content management structure and access to learner resources and modules for various stakeholders’ participation.
The minister said, “In line with the deployment of ICT in education policy of the Federal Government, as approved by the Federal Executive Council, NERDC’s partnership with SIDMACH Technologies Nigeria Limited, is a positive step in the right direction in providing access and aiding teaching and learning in Nigerian schools.
“The e-curriculum is a web-based, efficient and effective curriculum management solution for primary and secondary schools.”
The Secretary, NERDC, Prof. Godswill Obioma, said that the portal would contribute in no small measure towards ensuring that teachers, learners and other stakeholders have easy access to important teaching and learning resource.
He explained that it would enable students and parents to have online access to the subject matter, prerequisites, objectives and the National Curriculum content standards and assist policy-makers in the Federal Ministry of Education, State Ministries of Education and Local Education Authorities in domesticating the curriculum across all schools under their management and ensure that the curriculum is aligned with the prescribed content standards.
Obioma further stated that the e-curriculum would encourage, mentor and assist teachers to create collaboration groups and form networks to plan what is going to be taught, when it will be taught and the related tools and resources for the instructional delivery, among other things. He said, “We seize this opportunity to invite stakeholders to key into and embrace this initiative developed to induce and sustain access and quality of education in Nigeria,” he said
