Student wins car in tutorial competition
He had no inkling that he could become a car owner by mere attending a tutorial class. Caleb Uzuegbunam, a 17-year-old secondary school leaver enrolled at Unique Tutorials, Ikotun, Lagos for extra mural coaching. He had already obtained the senior secondary school certificate result that qualified him for the university admission.
“So, I came to Unique Tutorials for JAMB coaching to enable me get good marks that will secure me admission to study my dream course,” he said. But midway into his three months coaching, he got to know of a competition organised by the Association of Tutorial School Operators (ATSO) in the country.
The annual competition which is being sponsored by Fidelity Bank Plc is strictly for candidates who are patronising tutorial centres and preparing for the JAMB’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Uzuegbunam entered for the competition alongside over 15, 000 others across the country. They were all tested in core subjects and this was in three stages with the emergence of five finalists for the last stage.
At the end of the exercise, Uzuegbunam emerged the winner and rewarded with a Nissan Starlet car, the feat he is greatly cherished.
The winner who applied to the University of Ibadan (UI) to study Mechanical Engineering said his winning star prize did not come cheap.
According to him, it was due to hardwork, focus, determination and above all, the grace of God. He noted that with him now a proud owner of a car, he would not only continue to give his studies a deserved attention, he would see himself as good ambassador of the association through which he won the prize.
Following Uzuegbunam from behind are Situ Otito of Pass4Sure Concept, Lagos who came second and bagged a one-year scholarship award while Funmilayo Ajala of Bachel Academy, Akoka took third position and went home with Galaxy Tablet.
Speaking at the award ceremony, the Branch leader of Fidelity Bank Plc, Akoka branch, Lagos, Mr. Wale Badmus told the audience that the bank decided to sponsor the initiative as a way of supporting education development in the country.
He said the support was directed particularly at the youths who are aspiring to further their education so as to help them achieve their dreams. According to him, it is important to get the youths busy especially from the period they complete their secondary school to when they secure admission into higher institutions.
“But experience has shown that these youths are being neglected especially by government and such situation is dangerous signal to the economy and the country at large.
This is because if they are not meaningfully engaged while waiting for admission, there is tendency for them to go into crime and other untoward behaviours,” he explained.
Speaking in the same vein, the Acting President of the association, Mr. Dotun Shodunke said the essence of the competition was to encourage more youths to embrace education as many of them are now going into music, drama and football at the expense of studying.
Lamenting the dwindling standard of education in the country, he said the association believes that such kind of programme would greatly help in reversing the trend.
He thanked the sponsor and called on other corporate bodies and philanthropists to support the programme and any other laudable ones towards educational development in the country.
