NIM seeks involvement in NUC’s accreditation
The Nigerian Institute of Management has called on the National Universities Commission to involve the institute in its accreditation visitation to the universities.
The NIM President and Chairman of Council, Dr. Nelson Uwaga, made the appeal when he visited the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, in Abuja.
Uwaga also requested the institute’s participation in the teaching of entrepreneurship education in the nation’s tertiary institutions.
This, the Institute stated, could make the initiative more meaningful as it would introduce the practical and professional management angle of entrepreneurship to the curriculum.
Uwaga stated that if the proposal receives the NUC approval, his Institute would assist the Commission to consolidate on the gains of the initiative, noting that the skills that would be acquired through entrepreneurship in practice could make graduates to be employable and successful employers of labour.
He said, “We decided to use this visit as a forum to express our profound appreciation for the ongoing partnership between the institute and the commission in the area of accreditation of management courses in the universities.
“This exercise, which started under your watch, makes us feel comfortable that the commission is desirous of synergising with relevant bodies to give the best to the universities instead of wanting to do it alone like some other professional bodies.
“We want to use this opportunity to ask for a reappraisal of this commendable partnership with the aim of making the Institute more involved in accreditation visitation exercise to the universities.”
Uwaga explained that the institute had been contributing to national development through its partnership with the National Youth Service Corps since 2005, as well as the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji.
According to him, the NIM is also running top executive leadership programmes with the business schools of some Ivy League institutions, such as Harvard, Georgetown, Cambridge, Manchester, Queen’s and Stellenbosch universities.
The NIM President also requested the NUC boss to sponsor some of the commission’s workers to the 2014 Annual National Management Conference with the theme, “Strengthening the Institutions of Nationhood: The Challenges of Management,” which holds between September 21 and 23 in Warri, Delta State.
