‘Our children trek long distance to go to school’

The people of Tsani-Kuyambana, a community located on Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State have lamented the long distance children trek on daily basis to attend schools in neighbouring communities.

A resident, Idriss Abdullahi, said the long distance discourages parents from sending their children to school, a development which has resulted in many out-of-school children roaming the village.
He lamented that some of the children have resorted to hawking, while some have started exhibiting some questionable behaviours, largely due to drugs and idleness.
“When you are idle, you think of nothing but evil. If they (children) are in school, parents will have nothing to fear,” Abdullahi said.
Investigation showed that the community has no single school, a development which residents said calls for serious concern.
Further investigation showed that the nearest school to the community is located at Zariyawa, some distance away to the community.
“I doubt if you can trek to Zariyawa. Thought it is a neighbouring community, schools are to be close to the people because people, who go there are children, not adults,” he further explained.
Meanwhile, another resident, Kawu Abubakar, said some children go as far as Suleja town to attend schools, especially secondary schools.
Abubakar called on the local government to remember the community as the plight of residents suggests that the authorities have forgotten them.
