4,070 teachers to benefit from NTI retraining programme

NOT fewer than 4,070 teachers from across the country are expected to participate at the 2014 edition of a retraining programme under the Million Development Goals (MDGs), organised by the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI).

According to the NTI Director-General, Dr. Aminu Ladan Shareru, the annual retraining workshops are aimed at retooling teachers with current best practices in their career, saying that this will enhance their performance and competencies in pedagogy and subject matter contents.

Shaheru who spoke, at a pre-training meeting with stakeholders at the NTI in Kaduna explained that, “it is envisaged that after participation in the workshops, the acquired experiences of the teachers will have a knock-down effect on the learning achievements of their pupils which will ultimately lead to the overall development of the nation”.

“The benefits of government’s huge investment in sponsoring capacity building workshops for teachers should be maximally exploited through shared experiences and best practices as teachers return to their local stations after the exercise”.

“We are working hard with our education experts to produce excellent training manuals as well as provide relevant instructional resources that will be used at the workshops.”

Besides, Presidential Senior Special Assistant on MDGs, Dr. Precious Gbeneol, in a goodwill message, said that all teachers should be regularly exposed to new innovations in their profession, through training and retraining.

According to her, “using the Debit Relief Gains (DRGs), my office has recorded many goals, particularly in this sector”.

“My office has made available over N113.75 billion of the DRGs to the Federal Ministry of Education and its parastatals from 2006 till date, to implement various programmes and projects in the education sector”.

“Thus, the Presidency under the coordination of the NTI has successfully trained and retrained over 610,032 public primary and junior secondary school teachers nationwide between 2006 and 2013 in the core subject areas”. “Given the challenges of inadequate and late release of funds and data on MDG education projects which has made implementation and tracking of results very difficult, there is need for effective strategies and synergy between all relevant stakeholders that will ensure the achievement of the stated goals.
