COEASU, alumni differ on appointment of provost

The plan to appoint a new provost for the Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, has pit the college’s Academic Staff Union against the old students of the institution.

The two groups are backing different candidates for the post. The seat became vacant following the retirement of Prof. Idowu Adeyemi, who held the post for eight years.

While COEASU is urging the Federal Government to appoint Adeyemi’s successor from within, the old students are demanding that the opportunity should be thrown open. The alumni canvassed the demand last week.

But in a statement by COEASU’s Vice-Chairman, Mr. Tope Ozigbe, and General Secretary, Ade Adepoju, on Monday, the union said the college, having existed for 50 years, was old enough to produce the provost.

The COEASU statement read, “Our position is in tandem with best practices all over the world that chief executives of academic institutions are sourced from among academics within the system.
