‘Non-teaching staff play vital role in education’
The leadership of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions has said that members of the union play a significant role in the development of the nation’s education system.
The NASU General Secretary, Mr. Adeniyi Adeyemi, stated this on the sidelines of a visit to the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, in Abeokuta.
Adeyemi, who hailed the governor for giving priority to teachers’ welfare, noted that both the teaching and non-teaching staff were important in the school system.
Commending the government for approving 27.5per cent peculiarity allowance for teachers, he also urged the governor to extend the gesture to the non- teaching staff.
He said, “We thank the governor for agreeing to pay the 27.5 per cent peculiarity allowance to the teachers. But he should remember the non-teaching staff too.
“What we do in the school system is team work. Both the teaching and non-teaching staff are working together in the development of education. It is like baking of bread in the bakery, everyone plays a critical role before the bread is ready for consumption.”
Adeyemi, who also commended the recent reduction of school fees in the state-owned tertiary institutions, said the union would be happier if the government could wholly funded tertiary education.
According to him, the idea of giving tertiary education in the state 20 per cent subvention will pose a huge challenge, especially with the tuition reduction.
He added, “We want the government to try and support these institutions 100 per cent. Even the idea of giving 20 per cent subvention may become a challenge now that government is even reducing the fees of the tertiary institutions.”
Adeniyi, who frowned on the unemployment level in the state, called on the government to urgently address it.
He added, “As a union, we acknowledge the fact that the government is providing more employment for the unemployed youths, we think that the government can still do more.
