Ebola: Bayelsa NUT wants doctors in schools

Against the backdrop of Ebola Virus Disease cases in some states, the Bayelsa State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has appealed to the Federal Government to send doctors to primary and post-primary schools to carry out Ebola test on pupils before resumption.

Speaking with journalists in Yenagoa, the chairman of the union, Mr Ogola Brandla, said it had become imperative because each pupil is a product of different families, and that underscores the need for thorough Ebola screening to get them back into classrooms for academic work.

According to him, though the extension would affect their academics, it was also agreed by the parent/teachers association that in order to safeguard lives, pupils should undergo test before resumption.

Brandla, noted that it behooves the federal government to swing into action without delay by providing funds to carry out the needed screening of pupils across the country, stressing that failure to act fast could further extend the tentative resumption date fixed for October 13th 2014.

Noting that teachers are not exempted from the fear that the Ebola Virus has insurrected both at work place and homes, the NUT Boss, averred that sequel to the death of some doctors, teachers in the state have unanimously decided their resumption is predicated on how timely the federal government intends to commence the screening of pupils.

To this end, he reiterated that teachers are competent to carry out medical test, and as such for the exercise to successful, competent and certified doctors should be sent to primary and post-primary schools to carry out the test, even as he appealed that they should be equipped with all medical accessories for the exercise that would also ensure their safety.
