IFAC, World Bank chiefs, top economists for ICAN’s yearly confab


PRESIDENT of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), Warren Allen and World Bank’s Director of Core Operations Services, Dr. Ed Olowookere are among the resource persons that would lead other eminent personalities from within and outside Nigeria to attend the 44th Annual Accountants Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), billed to commence next Monday, September 8 in Abuja.

According to a statement by the institute’s Senior Manager, Corporate Communications and Marketing, Mrs. Bunmi Owolabi, the theme of the Conference, which will take place at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, through to Friday, September 12, is ‘Protecting Public Interest: Enhancing Professionalism’.

Allen is to present the lead paper, titled, “Chartered Accountants and the Society: The realities of serving the public interest” while the President of the institute, Chidi Ajaegbu will deliver the keynote address to about 4500 Chartered Accountants expected at the conference.

Beside the lead and plenary session papers, several other papers to be discussed by eminent resource persons at the conference include: “Professional Accountants: Adding value through Financial Reporting System”, “Standards for the Protection of Public Interest and the Performance of Supervisory Institutions”, “The Imperative of Corporate Governance in the Protection of Public Interest”, “Value Re-Orientation: Key Issue for National Development and the Role of the Accounting Profession”, as well as “Sustaining Ethical Standards in the Accountancy Profession” .

Other eminent resource persons expected at the conference include the former Managing Partner, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Ken Igbokwe; the Chairman of Guinness Nigeria Plc, Babatunde Salvage; Regional/Managing Partner (WA) of Ernst & Young, Henry Egbiki; Dr. Vincent Onodugo of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Chief Mike Ozekhome; and Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru. Meanwhile, in view of the current outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in West Africa and its penetration into Nigeria, the Institute has put measures in place to protect its members and other participants at the conference
