Philippines to establish three universities in Nigeria
The Philippines is to establish three
maritime universities in Nigeria in order to boost bilateral relations
between the two countries, the Nigerian Ambassador to Philippines,
Ambassador Akinyemi Farounbi, has said.
Farounbi, according to a
statement from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency
(NIMASA), stated this when he received officials of the agency in
Manila, Philippines. He said the decision to site the three universities in Nigeria followed the high performances of Nigerian cadets undergoing seafarers training in the Philippines.
“We view NIMASA not only as an instrument for training our youths in marine engineering, maritime transportation and naval architecture, but a tool in promoting diplomatic relationship between the Philippines and Nigeria.
“The embassy will continue to encourage the three universities to open their branches in Nigeria because we have seen what Nigerian students are capable of doing academically,” he added.
He explained that the Philippines, with only 100 million people, controlled about 28 per cent of the world’s total population of seafarers.
The ambassador said that with over 180 million people, Nigeria can provide up to 40 per cent of seafarers needed in the world. He commended NIMASA for sponsoring more than 1,000 students for seafarers’ training in Philippines.
Earlier, the Executive Director, Maritime Labour and Cabotage Service of the agency, Mr. Calistus Obi, commended the ambassador for his support to NIMASA.
