NYSC boss advises corps members on skill acquisition

The coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps in Osun State, Mr. Abada Okpiroro, has advised corps members to avail themselves of the opportunities of skill acquisition at orientation camps to make themselves self-reliant after service.

Okpiroro said this in a speech he delivered at the swearing-in of the 2014 batch “B” corps members deployed in the state.

A copy of the speech was made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Tuesday.

He said that it was unfortunate that many graduates roamed the streets in search of paid jobs after service without success.

He, however, said that corps members could equip themselves with useful skills which could be useful to them after service even if they were still interested in paid jobs.

Okpiroro said, “At this juncture, I want to enjoin the course participants to conduct themselves in a disciplined manner and abide by the camp rules and regulations and above all, participate fully in all the activities in order to have a fulfilling service year.

“ The skill acquisition programme will be organised for you and I want to charge you to take advantage of it. The fact remains that white collar jobs are scare but if you acquire a skill now, it will enable you to take off smoothly after service.”

Explaining why orientation programme did not hold in the state in August, the NYSC coordinator said that orientation of the 2014 Batch “B” corps members ought ro have taken place since August but was postponed till September because of the governorship election held in the state on August 9.

He added that the orientation course could not hold again in September due to the scare of Ebola virus disease.
