Introduce civic education, don tells Buhari

A University of Abuja lecturer, Prof. Sarah Anyanwu, has urged the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to introduce civic education in the nation’s schools.

Anyanwu, a professor of Economics, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday that education includes both academics and morals.

According to her, there is need to inculcate good values in pupils in order to curb social vices and their attendant consequences.

“Attention should be paid to morals at all levels of our education; it is not only academics. In the primary and secondary schools, civic education and patriotism should be introduced; pupils should be made to be good and patriotic citizens who see anything belonging to the government as their own.

“By so doing, we will stop vandalism, cultism, stealing and violence. Look at the damages in the North-East Zone; we do not need to use the money meant for development for rehabilitation and reconstruction. Moral values should be inculcated in school children,’’ she said.

The don also said that funding of education in the country still fell short of the 26 per cent United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s standard and called for increased funding for the sector.

According to her, infrastructural decay needs to be addressed at all levels of the sector.

“At the primary and secondary school levels, we need to recruit more teachers; the commitment of the teachers is very important as they need to be motivated.

“Parents are withdrawing their children from the public schools to the private schools where teachers are more committed,” Anyanwu said.

She canvassed that teachers in public schools should be properly motivated so that they could be committed, adding that salaries should be paid at the right time.
