Don’t deny children with disability good education, parents advised
The Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye has urged parents of children with disability not to deny them education.
She reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to provide quality and quantitative education to all the children in the state irrespective of their sex, financial background, ethnic affiliation or deformity.
The commissioner stated this at this year’s stakeholders’ forum of the Advocacy Committee on Special Education Matters held in Ikeja, last week. She noted that the need to accommodate Children with special needs informed the establishment of inclusive schools across the state.
“Parents should therefore enrol their children with disability in inclusive schools of their choice rather than keeping them at home,” she further advised. An inclusive school is where both children with and without deformity take lesson together under the same roof.
The commissioner said depriving a child of education based on his health matter or any other condition would not help the child and his parents or the society.
Oladunjoye however promised that the state government would continue to take the needs of the special children into consideration by providing necessary infrastructure and equipment that would aid their learning and movement.
Earlier in his remark, Chairman, House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Wahab Alawiye- King promised that the lawmakers would not deny education sector legislative support.
Also speaking at the event, General Manager, Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs (LASODA), Dr. Babatunde Awelenje identified stigmatisation as one of the major challenges facing Children with disability around the world.
He noted that about 98 million students who are living with disabilities constitute marginalised group around the world.
