Early Education, Panacea to Insecurity, Says Okiro
A former Inspector General of Police (IG) and Chairman, Police Service Commission (PSC), Mr. Mike Okiro, has called for the education of children as a means of fighting insecurity.
Okiro, who made this call at the weekend when he feted children of Unity Orphanage Home, Gwako, Gwagwalada, Abuja, said with the early education of children, the country would be investing in security.
While pledging to build a nursery school for the orphans as part of his 65th birthday celebration, the PSC boss explained that this was his own way of contributing to the social and educational development and enjoined others security watchers to fight insecurity by investing in the lives of the less-privileged.
He said: “When I was planning for my 65th birthday, I made up my mind to celebrate with orphans. I therefore chose this particular one just to prove that they are my children and that the children too should feel what family life is all about.
“On getting here, I was told that the children only start their education from primary and that there was no nursery school here, I decided to build one for them before December this year. When children are trained early in life with proper education, the problem of insecurity would be reduced to the bearest minimum.”
He called on well meaning and kind hearted Nigerians to invest in the lives of children, especially orphans, rather than spending lavishly on birthday parties that would not have positive impact on the citizens.
While extolling the virtues of the former IG, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Operations, Mr. Mike Zuokumor, said this gesture would make the children feel loved as well as making them realise that they are part of the society that must improved.
He said: “Okiro can afford a birthday bash anywhere in the world, based on his status in life, but decided to come to the orphanage home to celebrate with the children. This is not only worth emulating but must be imbibed by the rich and mighty of the society.
“Obviously, the children are very happy and they feel loved. This singular action will linger in their memories for a long period of time and it will help in building a safer society.”
Other items Okiro presented to the children included cartons of Indomie Noodles, sugar, beverages, diapers, bags of rice, bedspreads, slippers, sandals, T-shirts, caps, and installation of DSTV with one-year subscription.
Receiving the items on behalf of the children, the proprietor of the home, Mr. Williams Sheidu, thanked the former IG and called on other Nigerians to emulate him by identifying with the children, as he said FCT administration only provides incentive for the home.
The visibly highly elated children sang songs for the celebrant and prayed for long and healthy life for him.
