Give priority to Nigerian curriculum, private schools urged

The Proprietress of Flobeez Private School, Ojodu, Lagos, Mrs. Olubisi Akintayo has urged school owners in the country to give priority to Nigerian curriculum rather than British or American curricula.

She said this during the school end of session and prize giving ceremony held at the school, last week.

According to her, educationists should appreciate what the government put together in terms of curriculum before adding another one.

She urged them to take the curriculum, especially civic education which teaches the children good morals very seriously. “This will enable children to be aware of their environment and what the society expects from them,” she stressed.

She continued, “if we teach them only what the British society expects from them, how many of them will go to Britain, so there is no point teaching them what we will not use.” On quality of education, Akintayo urged her colleagues not to compromise standard.

“Some schools were just set up for profit but a true teacher or an educationist who knows his or her onions should know that their intention, mission and vision should be in the interest of the children,” she pointed out.

She also urged government, especially the Lagos State government to encourage school owners by reducing the tax they charged. “Government should encourage us because we are all aware that government schools cannot take all the children therefore they should reduce the tax on private schools,” she said.

At the event, outstanding students were given gifts and award. The students entertained their parents with cultural dance, choreography, poem, drama, among others.
