Poor Reading Culture In Nigeria

The chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Comrade Adesegun Raheem has explained why there is a poor reading culture in Nigeria.

In an interview with Leadership online on the low rate of reading among students in Nigerian society, the NUT boss attributed the extinction of reading culture to the neglect of parents’ responsibilities on their children.

According to Raheem, some Nigerian parents have neglected their parental responsibilities to the extend that most of them don’t know how their children are performing in school.

The educationist stated that most parents have left the duty for the teachers alone.
Raheem stressed that the relationship between teachers and parents should be cordial and inter twinned, saying it would assist the students and also promote their reading habit.

“My advise is for the parents to go back to the olden days culture and they should stop buying gadget that will hinder their children from reading”, he added.

Meanwhile, the NUT boss stated that Nigerian teachers are still determined to bring back the nobility of teaching profession and also ensured that all teachers in the state are computer literate.

“We have put in place some things that would benefit the teachers like sharing their views on social networking, seminal and workshop which will prepare them for promotional examination”, he added.

Meanwhile, The Akwa Ibom wing of the NUT has lauded Gov. Godswill Akpabio for recruiting 5,000 teachers into the service.

The Chairman of NUT in the state, Mr Etim Ukpong, made the commendation in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Uyo.

Ukpong said the employment would go a long way to boost the success of the free and compulsory education policy of the State Government. The free and compulsory education policy introduced in 2008/2009 session for public primary and secondary schools had been hampered by inadequate facilities and personnel.

He also thanked the state governor for approving the migration of serving school principals to salary grade level 17 with designation of Principals-General.
