LASU convocation under threat as SSANU plans boycott
THE Lagos State University’s (LASU) 19th convocation could be called off due to threat by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Lagos State University (LASU) Chapter, to boycott it over unresolved demands of the union.
In the over one hour meeting between principal officers and the union members, SSANU also pledged to continue its strike.
In his response at a press conference, the Vice Chancellor, John Oladapo Obafunwa, said that the planned convocation would go on as scheduled without any hindrance.
He said efforts had been made to resolve all pending issues with the union and a letter signed by the authorities of the school and representatives of the union would be forwarded to the Lagos State government.
He also reiterated that plans had already been put in place to meet the demands of the union and reach a compromise where necessary for the students’ benefit.
“We are also in the process of refunding over N69 million to students that have paid their school fees before it was reduced in earnest and by cheque after it they had been cleared”, he said.
The vice chancellor further averred that the university, despite its challenges, is committed towards producing all-round excellent students both academically and morally in various field of study.
Obafunwa gave assurance that “never again in the history of LASU will unsigned certificates be an issue, pledging that graduating students would henceforth collect their certificates on the convocation ground after they must have been cleared in their faculties. According to him, collection of certificates on convocation day is a global benchmark, which his administration “is working assiduously to uphold and the release of results within 2 weeks.”
