American University of Nigeria Says 15, Not Six Chibok Girls on Scholarship
Contrary to earlier reports that six Chibok girls are on scholarship at the Atiku Abubakar-owned American University of Nigeria (AUN), the school yesterday clarified the issue, stating that the actual figure is 15.
In a statement made available to THISDAY by the Executive Director, Communications and Public Relations, Daniel Okereke, the school said the girls are presently in an intensive individualised programme to prepare them for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Signed by the President of the institution, Margee Ensign, the statement read in part: “The attention of the American University of Nigeria has been drawn to your news report today titled: “Borno Sends 36 Chibok Schoolgirls to International Schools.
“The International School in Yola, Adamawa State, referred to in the story is the American University of Nigeria.
“There are 15, not six Chibok schoolgirls studying under a scholarship programme provided by the AUN Foundation. They have been here since late August.
“The girls are in high spirits and coping tremendously well in their new academic and social environment. They are being looked after by a dedicated team of national and international specialists.
“If anyone had previously doubted the power of education to transform lives, they should believe now, with the amazing transformation of the 15 Chibok girls studying at AUN.
“We will appreciate if you can publish these important clarifications so as to put the records straight, and in their proper perspective.”
