Tunde-Ojo’s day of honour, Rotary Club donates ICT lab to school


THE honour was fitting for Fikayo Tunde-Ojo as she mounted the exalted seat of the presidency of Rotary Club of Ogudu GRA, Rotary International, District 9110, Nigeria as the eighth president of the club during her investiture, which took place at OGRA Event Hall, Ogudu GRA, Lagos.

Also, board members of the club were inducted as well as the launch of the club’s service projects for 2014-2015 Rotary Year.

She described her investiture as an opportunity to serve humanity for the rest of her life and disclosed projects in her service year to include sponsorship of two children the club adopted at the Little Saints Orphanage, which would cost N125,000 and giving out of 12 artificial limbs to amputees at a cost of N25,000 each.

“Today, we have given out an eye equipment to a state General Hospital to test cataract, glaucoma and other eye-related defects and we can rightly say that we have done three out of our eight projects, remaining five,” she said.

Tunde-Ojo added that the club had given a micro-credit loan of N50,000 each to 10 beneficiaries.

According to her, the sum of N500,000 has been earmarked for this project and as more money comes in, the amount would be increased for more recipients.

“Other projects include equipping Ogudu Grammar School’s laboratory with computers and Internet facility for effective practical training of students and a career talk to be delivered to the pupils by professional members of the club.

“We also plan to donate table tennis boards to some locations in Ogudu for recreational purposes so as to engage our youths and prevent them from idleness.

“We are doing this in conjunction with Lagos State government that had promised to provide coaches who would train them to become future champions,” she said.

Tunde-Ojo also mentioned Agboyi riverine community project where the people in the community need potable water, sewage treatment plant, toilets, labour room in their health centre, foot bridge as well as renovation of their school classrooms.

“This is a big project and we are collaborating with our sister club, the Rotary Club of Wayne, Michigan, United States to accomplish this project,” she said.

The president disclosed her star project as the renovation of Ogudu GRA Primary School classrooms, a school for children with special needs.

“These are helpless children being taught in an environment that is not conducive with no tiles on the floor, no desk to write on and they are all packed in a classroom.

“We plan to tile the floor, fix doors, install metal windows, provide desks with seats and paint the wall among others.”

The immediate past president, Chidi Nnadi, who said he led the club when it was almost dying, disclosed that some of the projects that were completed during his tenure included donation of incubator to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for the care of premature babies, sponsorship of the two children in the Little Saints Orphanage Home among others.

The Guest Speaker, Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Community Medicine, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Dr. Laofe Ogundipe advised Nigerians to be members of universal care system where they would contribute a token and get unrestricted treatment anytime they fall sick.

Chairman of the occasion, former Governor of Ekiti State, Chief Olusegun Adebayo Oni, lauded the magnanimity of the club that donated eye equipment machine to a state.

The Chairman, Investiture Committee. 2014-2015 and Assistant Governor, Dr. Jide Akeredolu urged Nigerians to comply with every hygienic instructions given to curtail Ebola virus.

In a related development, members of Rotary Club of Omole-Golden, have upgraded the educational capacity of teachers and pupils Oke-Ira Grammar School, Ogba, Lagos, by donating a modern information and communication technology (ICT) laboratory to the school.

The club donated over 20 modern desktop computers and UPS accessories to the school, to improve the educational standard of pupils, especially in computer awareness.

This is part of the programmes mapped out to celebrate the club’s 10th year anniversary.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the President of the Club, Mr. Chris Alabi noted that for Nigerian children to be able to compete in the ever dynamic technology world, they need exposure to latest computing technologies and as such the desktop computers and UPS accessories are all connected to the Internet.

According to him, Rotary Club believes in educating and empowering the youth because they are the future leaders of tomorrow.

“If our youths are educated and empowered, it will go a long way in reducing the rate of social vices in the country,’’ he said.

He stated that one of the objectives of the club was to help students to achieve their set goals in life as the club was aware that the exposure the facilities would make of the pupils will boost their academic performance.

He urged the students to make good use of the materials given to them, even as he advised the students to take their studies seriously.

Responding to the gesture, the Principal who was represented by Mr. Adegboye Adebiyi, expressed gratitude to the club who she described as “a people-oriented club”.

He said: “This is not the first time these noble and great people would come to assist us with good things of life. It is noteworthy that Oke-Ira Senior Grammar School can boast of a standard and well-stocked library, tables and chairs for the students, and renovated toilets facility that meet human standard, courtesy of this great club.

“Our partnership with this great club has been like partnership with Almighty God, for there had been a great improvement in the students’ academic performance both in the internal and external examinations.”

Adegboye confirmed that the club had provided basic amenities, which were beneficial to all concerned, especially the pupils and the entire staff of the school. He pointed out that it was the government’s desire to give children quality education and that the government was always willing to partner other stakeholders
