UNIUYO bomb scare: More suspects in police net

Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed making more arrests in connection with the alleged attempt by a 100-level student of medical photography to bomb the University of Uyo last weekend.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gabriel Achung, who confirmed the arrests while speaking with Daily Sun yesterday, however declined to give details, even as he said the hand grenade recovered from the suspect was with the police.

Achung praised the vigilance of members of Peace on Campus Initiatives, who alerted the police to the existence of the bombs in the suspect’s luggage, and urged all citizens of the state to adopt such security alertness to make the state crime-free.

“If people were not at alert, nobody knows the havoc he would have wreaked with the bombs among his fellow students. So, we are investigating to know who provided him with the grenades. At least, about two persons have so far been arrested. All of them are from this state,” he said.

The commissioner, who assumed duties two weeks ago, however stressed that he was not new in the state having served in different capacities as DPO and deputy commissioner of police between 1992 and 2012 before he was transferred.

“There is no part of Akwa Ibom that I don’t know. So, I am not coming here to study the state like some of my colleagues are doing. I was first posted to Ini Local Government in 1992 and later transferred to Mbo when those two areas were very hot. Later, they sent me to Ikot Ekpene where there was war among motor parks and I made sure I brought sanity to all those places,” the police boss said.

He warned politicians not to drag the police into politics, as no policeman would contest any election or vote on election day.

Achung promised to be unbiased in the discharge of his duties, especially during the party primaries and the main elections, but warned that there would be no sacred cow in the face of the law as far as electioneering was concerned.
