WAEC results: 24th position of Oyo unacceptable – Makinde

Following the 2014 published results of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) in which Oyo State emerged 24th out of the 36 states of the federation and Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Mr. Seyi Makinde, yesterday said the position was unacceptable.

The analysis of the last May/June WAEC results, published on the website of the council, placed Oyo State on 24th position. The summary of the results of students, who had five credits and above, revealed that the state scored 19 per cent.

Makinde, who lamented that the results reflected the falling standard of education under the administration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, disclosed this in Ibadan when he publicly declared his intention to seek nomination to contest the governorship seat of the state on the platform of PDP in the 2015 general elections.

“Our 1,576 primary schools and 324 secondary schools are in danger of total collapse of knowledge. The APC government has desecrated the school environment I was proud of. I promise to reverse the downward trend in education in Oyo State,” he said.

According to him, the 24th position was a signal that the present generation owed the generations yet unborn the duty to reverse the rot in education, adding that he would deliver the people of Oyo State from purported bondage of APC through massive developmentl projects.

Saying the APC had failed the people and compounded their sufferings due to an alleged lack of vision and development initiatives, Makinde said: “My vision for Oyo State is to create an atmosphere where business can thrive.”
